Overcoming Fear

Overcoming fear is easily one of the most difficult challenges I have faced throughout my life. The sad thing about fear is that it misguides you and it’s one of the many factors that holds one back from being successful. As I progressed through the belts in Bejanian Martial Arts, I was extremely confident but once I hit red with black a certain fear was brought upon me. I was worried and I had doubt that I wouldn’t have been able to fulfill the criteria necessary to become black belt. I don’t blame myself at all, due to the pressure of the black belt test. I kept on thinking of scenarios in which I wouldn't have been able to do the running test or the physical test.

Considering my fear of all these things, my very first step was to let go of every single negative thought that was in my brain; this wasn’t an easy task but it was doable. I began to train my mind into feeling like a champion by continuously thinking of situations where I would successfully achieve my black belt. I also put in the hard work that was required, I would run the three and a half miles every single day. I definitely didn’t do well the first time, but over time I started to see progress. I eventually did pass my running test and I did get my first-degree black belt. This was not an easy task but an important lesson I learned was that through positive thinking, and hard work, anything is possible. Getting my second-degree black belt wasn’t a breeze but using the formula that I learned from getting my First Degree made it a possible achievement for me.
